The Blue Ground Beetle is classified as Near Threatened NR on The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species 1996. The blue ground beetle is the largest and one of the rarest ground beetles found in the UK. Both larvae and adults are mainly nocturnal, and thought to feed largely on tree slugs. The larvae have only been found on a handful of occasions in the UK. All of the sites where it has been found on Dartmoor are ancient woodlands, mainly oak with occasional beech, in river valleys with a southwesterly aspect. It is globally threatened, being found locally across Europe.

The process here is an artist’s handprint, in this case, a dry point. The drawing is scratched onto acetate, inked by hand and printed on a hand-operated printing press, in this case, a 1932 etching press
