The process here is an artist’s handprint, in this case, a dry point. The drawing is scratched onto acetate, inked by hand and printed on a hand-operated printing press, in this case, a 1932 etching press.
The stag beetle is a globally threatened species, protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and listed as a priority species for conservation in the UK and London Biodiversity Action Plans.
Stag beetles are relatively widespread in southern England and live in the Severn valley and coastal areas of the southwest. Elsewhere in Britain they are extremely rare or even extinct.
